Pilots in High Demand
With baby-boomers retiring and increased demand from the developing world, over 97,000 pilots will be needed in Canada and the United States alone over the next two decade.
Despite the need, the student services coordinator at CPA (Coastal Pacific Aviation), said that the number of students training to hit the skies is actually dropping.
India, China, Middle East and Europe are seeing a great increase in air travelers by year 2020. US and Canada is expected to grow at the lowest annual rate but still at 3% average. According to ICAO number of qualified pilots, maintenance crew and ATC will need to more than double within next 20 years in order to meet the expected global demand. There is chance of shortfall in all of those areas. The need for a significant increase in the number of those professionals is based on estimates that the number of commercially-operated aircraft will have increased from 62,000 in 2010 to 151, 500 between 2010 and 2030. This means total departures will increase to 52 million. By year 2030 the world would need close to 1 million pilots, 1.2 million maintaining crew; could lead to significant personnel shortage for the commercial aviation industry. According to ICAO study we need to train additional 166,000 pilots, 360,000 maintenance and 40,000 more air traffic controllers every year to meet that demand.
